    About Custom Law

Summerfield-Dandurand Law Group, LLP, Founders of Custom Law

Custom Law is a trial firm built by former prosecutors. For years, our founders worked for the State. They filed the charges, built the cases, and stood up in Hamilton and Madison County courtrooms to argue them. That work taught them exactly how the government assembles a case against a person, where the pressure points are, and how often a story that looks airtight on paper starts to come apart once someone actually pushes on it. Today, they use all of that on the other side, for the people the State has decided to come after.

By the time most people call us, something has already gone wrong. A charge has been filed. A marriage is coming apart. An accident has left someone staring at bills they never planned for. Whatever brought you here, the damage is usually already underway, and pretending otherwise would insult your intelligence. What we can do is step into it with you, tell you honestly where you stand, and fight the case before us until there is nothing left to fight.

We handle criminal defense, divorce and family law, personal injury, business litigation, and mediation. We work out of three offices: Noblesville and Anderson here in Indiana, and Lake Bluff up in Illinois. From those offices, we take cases across Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, and the rest of Central Indiana, and, in Illinois, across Lake Forest, Lake County, and the greater North Chicago area.

We keep our caseload deliberately manageable. That is a choice, and it costs us volume, but it means the attorney you hire is the attorney who actually works your file. You will not be handed off to a call center or left sitting in a queue as your court date approaches.

We ask one thing of every client in return: be straight with us.

In this country, you are innocent until the State proves otherwise, and that principle is the ground we fight on. But a case is won or lost on the record, and we cannot fight a record we do not fully understand. So we need the whole story, the good parts and the bad ones, from the very first conversation. If you are going to lie to your own lawyer, you are in the wrong office.

    Meet Our Attorneys

Nicholas Dandurand, Founding Partner and Chief Operating Officer

    Nicholas Dandurand

Founding Partner & Chief Operating Officer

Nicholas Dandurand started out prosecuting the State’s cases, not defending them. As a Deputy Prosecutor in Hamilton County, he learned the evidentiary standards, police protocols, and how the local courts actually run, from the inside. He puts every bit of that to work against the State now that he defends a criminal case.

Before law, he served six years in the Indiana Army National Guard as a pneudraulics specialist, keeping the hydraulic and pneumatic systems on military helicopters running. He went on to Ball State University, then earned his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law.

His practice runs across five areas: family law and divorce, criminal defense, mediation, commercial collections, and e-discovery. He’s a state-certified Registered Domestic Relations Mediator in Indiana, so he can fight for one side of a divorce or custody case, or, when both parties want it, sit in the middle as a neutral and help them settle without a trial. Earlier in his career at the international firm Arnold & Porter, he built discovery protocols for corporate document reviews and ran teams of hundreds of attorneys at once; complex, document-heavy litigation doesn’t rattle him.

As Custom Law’s Chief Operating Officer, he also runs the firm’s day-to-day.

Robert Bob Summerfield, Founding Partner and Chief Executive Officer

    Robert “Bob” Summerfield

Founding Partner & Chief Executive Officer

Bob Summerfield learned to try cases by prosecuting them. For years, he served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in two Indiana counties, Hamilton and Madison, handling felonies and trying hundreds of cases for the State. He knows exactly how a prosecutor builds a case, because building them was his job. Now he uses that against the State, from the inside out.

He has practiced law in Indiana for more than twenty years. His defense work runs the full range, from infractions and misdemeanors up through Level 1 to Level 6 felonies, with serious drug charges, violent crimes, theft and property offenses, and probation violations at the center of it. In OWI cases, he goes straight to the mechanics: the stop itself, the warrant authorizing a blood draw, and whether the breath-test device was ever calibrated as the law requires.

He also handles divorce and custody, domestic battery and protective orders, and personal injury, including commercial-vehicle wrecks, where he makes the insurance company account for what its driver actually cost you.

Before law school, Summerfield earned his degree from Purdue University, where he focused his studies on how juries think. It is the same instinct he brings into a courtroom now. He went on to earn his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law.

In his words: “I fought the law and I won.”

    Our Approach

We were prosecutors first. That experience is the core of how this firm works. We know how the other side builds a case, so we know where to look for the cracks. We go after the weak points instead of steering you toward the first plea or settlement on the table.

There's no cookie-cutter version of your case. What you're facing affects your family, your career, and your freedom, and the strategy has to be built around what you actually need out of it, not run through a template. That's true whether it's a criminal charge, a lawsuit, a real estate matter, or a business dispute.

We walk you through it step by step. The legal system is designed to be confusing, and fear usually comes from not knowing what happens next. So we tell you plainly, at every stage, what's coming, what it means, and what we're doing about it.

And we keep our eyes on what's really at stake: not just the verdict or the filing, but your reputation, your freedom, your peace of mind, and your financial security. That's what we're working to protect.
